2018 RESOLUTIONS

GOO MORNING, LORD

JOEL_SMS.png

Today, I am sharing a conversation on MINDSET with my friend of many years, Joel Osteen. Joel is the lead pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, and his televised messages are seen weekly by over 7 million viewers in over 100 countries. Joel is known world-wide for his positive outlook on life.

As we talked, I asked Joel to share what he believes is most helpful in keeping a positive mindset. Joel always has just the right words and they are always reinforced by his personal optimism. I am blessed by his friendship.

Dr. Dave: Joel, I have a special condition called Reverse Paranoia. It’s the constant feeling that people want to do good to me, to bless me, and to show me favor!

Joel Osteen: I love it! I think we should expect good things. Your life draws in what you are constantly expecting. Dream big dreams. Expect God to do things beyond your own ability.

I encourage you with this. You would not be alive unless God had another victory in front of you. We all hit setbacks, and sometimes we get stuck and we think life will never get any better. Don’t adopt that mindset. Get up every morning believing this could be your day for a breakthrough, a promotion, a healing – whatever you are praying about and believing for. Life should keep on getting better and better.

Dr. Dave: How do you keep a good attitude? It takes a lot of work, so how do people work on keeping a positive mindset in life?

Joel Osteen: It is a daily choice we make. You have to get up in the morning and make a daily choice to be positive. How you start the day plays a huge role in what your day will become. Before you have a lot of negative influences intrude into your morning, it’s better to make the choice and say, “I’m excited about today. I’m grateful to be alive.”

I’ve found that if you find something to be grateful for, the day will go better. Even though there may be struggles in your life, being positive is a choice you must make.

Dr. Dave: Yes, every day you have a choice whether to say, “Good morning, Lord!” or “Good Lord,
morning!”

Joel Osteen: Every morning, have something like this playing in your internal dialogue:
I am blessed.
I am prosperous.
I am redeemed,
forgiven,
talented,
creative,
disciplined,
focused,
confident,
secure,
prepared,
qualified,
motivated,
equipped,
empowered,
anointed,
accepted, and
approved.
I am not average.
I am not mediocre.
I am a child of the Most High God.
My best days are still out in front of me.

We’re going to keep praying for you and believing God’s very best for you and your family and
your business.

Keep looking ahead; keep your mind fixed on the positive. This is the how you start making the rest of your life the best of your life.

SHIFT YOUR BRILLIANCE

Our podcast and blog guest today is my good friend, Simon T. Bailey. Simon has worked as an executive of many companies including Disney, and he currently does consulting for Fortune 500 companies such as Verizon, Subway, and Gatorade.

Simon is a hospitality guru and is all about positive customer interaction. He believes that positive interactions and relationships help to build a culture of trust and respect with your customers. This culture then helps you to build a thriving business with a loyal customer base.

Simon challenges people to shift their thinking and create their future. He believes everyone can be brilliant. Simon says, “As a leader and a business owner or manager, your most important asset is always people.”

In our conversation, I asked Simon several questions about branding, customer service, and even faith in the workplace. His answers are brilliant.

Dave: What is branding?
Simon: Branding is not a product or a service. Branding is an emotional connection, a perception, a moment, and a memory. So every single day, you are a brand and you are creating a moment.

Dave: But what if you are not the boss? How do you brand yourself?
Simon: Go to your boss and say, “What is it that I can take off your plate that you don’t like to do? How can I help you be more successful?” That’s how you brand the moment.

Dave: What is one good customer service tip?
Simon: Customer service is really common sense, but common sense isn’t really common practice. The people that get customer service right, do it right every single day. They do the consistent, little things the right way every time.

Dave: How can a business person or someone in the corporate arena bring their faith to the workplace?
Simon: Start with these three areas of understanding:
1. When people interact with you, you are God present to them.
2. Consider going above and beyond, and give a little something extra for nothing.
3. Your attitude shows there is something different about you. When people are around you, they feel better than they did before they were in your presence.
Be the best at what you do! Be the SME (Subject Matter Expert), and people will notice the difference.

Dave: If you had 60 seconds to live, what do you want people to know and remember about
you?
Simon:

  • I aspire to inspire before I expire!
  • I would want my son and daughter to know that I love them, I believe in them, and I
  • want them to go further than I have ever gone.
  • I would want everyone who has ever been impacted by my work to say that I hugged them with my words!

Shift Your Brilliance is Simon’s book about the new mindset for our new economy. In this age, you must become divergent in your thinking. You have to have the mindset of creating the future instead of waiting for it to be created for you.

YOU ARE BORN TO SUCCEED

Dr. Dave Martin interviews Dr. Nido Qubein.

At the National Speakers Association annual meeting, I had the privilege of having lunch with Dr. Nido Qubein, President of High Point University. Dr. Qubein is a brilliant man, and one of the greats. (Be sure to listen to this week’s podcast for his story of coming to America alone at age 17.) Dr. Qubein has become a highly successful and eminently respected leader, and today, I want to pass along a few principles he shared with me during our thought provoking lunch.

Principles from the life of Nido Qubein, President of High Point University:

  • Life does not work out exactly the way we want it to work out. However, often after adversity,
  • comes abundance.
  • If you want to be a great person you must walk hand in hand and side by side with great people.
  • Who you spent time with is who you become.
  • How you change is how you succeed.
  • If you want to get something out of life, you have to put something into life.
  • You can’t just take the fruit of the tree; you have to plant the seed in the ground first.
  • When you have purpose in your life, you will have energy.
When you have energy, you can take action.
When you take action, you can have results.
When you have results, you will have success.
When you have success, you can have significance, doing good things in the world around you.
When you have significance, you can have true joy, happiness, and fulfillment.
And then the cycle starts all over again.
  • You are born to succeed.
  • Every step you take forward helps you learn new things.
  • The secret to life:
There is a difference between making a decision and making a commitment. Decisions can be made easily, because decisions are made with the brain. You think through it, you reason it out, and you decide which way to proceed. But commitments are different. You make a commitment with your heart. Commitments are longer lasting. Commitments are harder to break. Commitment produce better results in life. Life is learning to shift from making decisions, which are transactional, to making commitments, which are transformational.
  • Figure out as quickly as you can, as efficiently and effectively as you can, the methodology to get what you want out of life without having to give up what you most want to keep in your life.

GET READY, GET SET, GO

paper-3042645_1920.jpg

Today is June 27, the 26th Wednesday in 2018. This weekend is the midpoint of the year, the end of June and the beginning of July. As we move into the second half of 2018, I would like to pause for just a bit and consider making a few midyear resolutions. Back in January, we all had grand plans for the year. We made resolutions to lose weight, exercise regularly, eat better, save money, perhaps start a new company, find new work, and make relationship improvements. Those and many other areas of our lives were covered in our optimistic outlook and plans for a new, improved 2018. But that was six months ago. How long did it take us to fall right back into eating pizza on Saturday night, and missing a trip or two (or three) to the gym, and spending our money immediately Instead of saving it?

Some of you may be still on track with your resolutions, and if you are, I applaud you! However, many people failed to complete their New Year’s resolutions. In fact, we are told that only 8% of people follow through with their resolutions. I think there’s a reason for this low number. One reason could be the resolutions people make are so grand they become all consuming, and then they are quickly abandoned in favor of every day living. Another reason is that sometimes New Year’s resolutions are a list of wishes instead of a commitment to change. And yet another reason is that we have this underlying idea that New Year’s resolutions are made to be broken. But whatever the reason, most people fail to follow up.

So, today I am proposing that at the halfway point in 2018, we make midyear resolutions. These resolutions need to be made with the express purpose of completing them. Remember back in school when you would have races during PE? The teacher would say, “On your mark…get ready…get set…GO! That’s exactly where we are right now. ON YOUR MARK, is now. It is today. It is the halfway point of 2018.

On your mark, GET READY. To get ready is to decide your goals for the next six months. This is a very limited timeline, so I would advise you to choose just one or two things that you want to accomplish in the next six months. Don’t go crazy and make a list of 15, unless you are willing to put the effort into making 15 changes in your life in the next 26 weeks. To be most effective, choose just one or two defined areas to receive your attention and focus.

There are three keys you must know as you choose and set goals.
1. Be specific. If you want to lose weight in the next six months don’t just write down a goal of losing weight, because that could be a pound or 40 pounds. Be very specific. “I will lose 5 pounds a month between now and the end of the year.” Or “I will lose 20 pounds before December 1.” Or maybe you want to save money. “I will save $2,000 by Christmas.” Be very specific about your goal.
2. Be reasonable. Don’t make a midyear resolution of qualifying for the Olympics in a sport that you are beginning this weekend. That would be fantastic, but it is not truly a reasonable goal. Know what you want to accomplish and set yourself a goal that is doable. The object here is to reach your goal, not to set something so unattainable that you give up. So be reasonable.
3. Be inspired. Make your goal something that stretches you, something that is not part of your every day experience. Set a goal that will change you and create growth in you. Maybe your goal is to read two books a month until the end of the year. That’s a great goal, and when you choose those books, choose books that make you better.
Be specific, be reasonable, and be inspired as you GET READY by deciding your midyear
goals.

On your mark, get ready, GET SET. ‘Getting set’ is getting in position, and to be positioned for success in achieving your midyear resolutions you need to evaluate two areas.

1. First, you need to evaluate your time. If you’re going to add one or two goals to accomplish in the next six months - goals that grow you, goals that make you better, goals that open up another avenue of purpose in your life - you need to know what time you have available to work on these new goals.

Take a piece of paper and write down what you spend your time doing every day. Block out seven or eight hours for sleep and whatever amount of time you spend on your job, then look at where you spend your extra hours. It is in those ‘other hours’ that you will find the time to put toward your new goals. Are you wasting time during your day? Is there an extra hour in the morning or evening that you could dedicate towards your goals?

Time is our most precious commodity. Time is all we have. At our job, we trade our time for money. With people, we trade our time for meaningful relationships. Time is our currency, and the truth is everyone has the same amount of hours in the day. Successful people just use their hours more efficiently and effectively and more wisely than other people. So as you are getting set, evaluate where you spend your time, for the purpose of locating the extra minutes and extra hours to focus on your new goals.

2. Second, you need to evaluate your goals. When I say ‘evaluate your goals’ I mean think about why you want to do the goals you listed. If you listed that you want to save money, why did you put that? If you want to be more healthy, why? Why do you want to lose weight? Why do you want to find a new job? Why do you want change in your relationship? Your reason is everything. Your reason has to be strong enough to push you through when you want to quit. Your reason has to give you fuel. Do you want to be more healthy so that you will be able to play with your grandkids one day? Do you want to save money so that you can go on an international trip? What is your reason for your specific goal – in other words, what is the goal behind your goal? That is your finish line; that is your prize. That is what you are really working to obtain. Write down your ‘why’ and put it where you can see it every day. It is the ‘goal behind the goal’ that will motivate you to keep your midyear resolutions.

On your mark, get ready, get set, GO! Now get started! This Sunday is the beginning of July, and there are six months remaining in this year. But why wait until Sunday? Starting today, you have 188 days to accomplish your midyear resolutions. Get busy. If you don’t know what to do first, my suggestion, and I highly encourage you to do this, is to look for assistance. Look for a Coach. Look for a teacher. Look for someone, anyone who will help you along this path. If this were something easy that you could do all by yourself, you probably would have already done it. But most likely, your goals are not really easy. And they’re certainly not easy to accomplish alone.

Find someone to help you. If you want to eat healthy, talk to a nutritionist and do research on clean eating. If you want to save money, look up a plan for weekly savings and the best investment opportunities to compound your money. If you are struggling in a relationship, and you’re goal is to improve that in a measurable way, consider talking with a counselor or a relationship professional to give you specific action steps toward change. Whatever it is that you want to accomplish, if you don’t have a plan in place, you’re setting yourself up to fail. I strongly encourage you do what it takes to get a plan and find someone who can help you with that plan.

I’d love to hear from you and to know what your midyear resolutions are. Email me at coachdave@davemartin.org and tell me what you plan to accomplish by the end of 2018. On your mark, get ready, get set, GO! And make the rest of your year the best of your year!
